C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
CRP is a protein produced by the liver. Its release into the bloodstream increases in response to inflammation in the body.
Types of Inflammation
Inflammation can be:
* Acute (Sudden and Temporary): Occurs as a protective response to injury, infection, or disease.
* Chronic (Long-Term): Can result from repeated tissue injury or irritation, such as from smoking or environmental chemicals.
CRP Test
A CRP test measures the levels of CRP in the blood to:
* Indicate the presence and severity of inflammation
* However, it cannot determine the cause or location of the inflammation
Role of Inflammation
Inflammation is a natural response to injury or disease.
* Acute inflammation promotes healing and tissue repair.
* Chronic inflammation, if prolonged, can damage healthy tissues.
High CRP Levels
Elevated CRP levels may indicate:
* Serious health conditions causing inflammation
* Chronic inflammation
Blood Test Procedure
A blood sample is typically taken from a vein in the elbow or wrist.
* For children, a topical anesthetic cream may be used to minimize pain.
* The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Understanding Results
* Normal results do not necessarily rule out underlying abnormalities.
* If results are unclear or concerning, contact your doctor for further clarification.
* Consult with your doctor to discuss the reasons for recommending the tests and interpret the results.
