Blood Tests

Purpose:

* Assess health status and monitor conditions
* Diagnose and treat illnesses, injuries, and infections

Procedure:

* Small blood sample drawn from the elbow (or wrist in some cases)
* Blood collected in bottles with color-coded tops indicating different tests
* Blood bottles contain anticoagulant to prevent clotting

Interpretation:

* Abnormal results indicate potential health issues
* Doctors use results to determine treatment plans and prevent future problems

Types of Tests:

* Cholesterol and blood glucose: Assess risk of heart disease and diabetes
* Troponin: Diagnoses heart attack
* Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP): Diagnoses heart failure
* INR: Monitors blood clotting in patients taking warfarin
* Liver and kidney function tests: Evaluate organ performance

Frequency and Locations:

* Performed as needed
* Can be done in a hospital, GP surgery, or diagnostic center
